Ray Bradbury claimed
He could remember being born.
To his detractors who said
This was impossible
Ray responded:
"Were you there?!"
I don't remember
Being born, and I think
I am glad of that.
But there is so much more
I don't remember from
My life I wish I did. I'm told
I misremember many events,
Even if in my mind they seem
Clear and incontrovertible.
In truth I do not wish
To remember my birth,
And seem to have
Purposely forgotten my youth, yet
I do wish I could remember
What came before. Some think
Children are able still to
Remember some existence before
Becomming human - that
They can still see beyond
The physical world
In which we must live
But then forget as
They grow older.
Is there more? Or
Am I only dreaming?
If I slumber, may I awaken
And remember.

As I commented on someone else's post, memories are altered each time we bring them up. No one could possibly remember the exact "truth," least of all because it's only ONE point of view. Feelings overlay the reality. Ray Bradbury might have been bullshitting. Has any other famous person claimed this? I suppose our BODIES remember being born. It's there somewhere. We still manage to function without a conscious memory of our birth, though, and "repression" takes care of memories that would disturb us. You are so spiritual and cosmic, Zachary, it makes me want to say practical things! (Macoff)
ReplyDeleteI enjoy reading your work which resonates in a deep part of me.
ReplyDeleteThis is wonderful. My therapist once led me through an exercise with the constant prompt "Yes, and what happened just before that" until the earliest of memories.
