Today, the Spirit Group I belong to, met for session 10 of the 11 part Sacred Ground series on race and faith. It has been an intense exposure to the history we have never been exposed to. The Preamble of the Declaration of Independence is an eloquent hope for a new nation. Studying it in eighth grade, no one told me that the ‘all men are created equal’ didn’t include me since I am female. It is disheartening to see states that are making it more difficult for people to vote instead of easier. The extreme partisanship that polarizes our country makes me embarrassed to identify as an American. Putting all the power in the hands of white men of property certainly did not cause them to look out for the rights of others. Tonight, I have no idea what would make a nation truly great.

Simple and profound. "Lift Every Voice and Sing" is one of the most stirring songs I have ever heard. I only first heard it about five years ago. So much history passed us by -- and on purpose.
