Mindful Breathing

I carry all my stress and tension in my upper back and shoulders. I can feel my trapezius muscles tightening up. This could be due to the conflict between my head and my heart. My head wants to think things through logically while my heart says “act!” I definitely try to follow my heart which can cause tight muscles when my head is chattering away. I can be impulsive especially when looking for ways to do good in the world. Worry and inaction also cause tension in my upper back. Meditative breathing is the best distraction I have found as this turns off my mind. Inhale 2,3,4. Hold 2,3,4. Exhale 2,3,4. Hold 2,3,4. Or inhale 2,3,4. Exhale 7,6,5,4,3,2,1. And in the words of Thich Nhat Hahn

Breathing in, I calm body and mind.

Breathing out, I smile.

Dwelling in the present moment I know this is the only moment.
