Online some 12 hours of a day,
with paperkeeping on weekends, too,
I have one job -- paying graciously
my bills, trying to keep abode of a piece.
And it's grace I get to spend
hours every day doing a thing that endures:
pure science.
During the day, if I can get the gears
to shift me into the amenable lane,
or late at night,
my second job is writing -- whether good or no.
Maybe poetry compels because pure science
worships at the same throne: Unknown.
My third job is keeping food passing into-
though-and-on-out this kitchen (working
at home makes that look, believe me,
more doable than it is & I've wrestled heavily
to come to terms with expectations and
a balance of those "work-life" forces).
But I'm called to find what's the good ...
turn it into life.

This gives the ILLUSION that you've slipped into prose for a bit, which makes me smile. You are a pretty good poetry crafter to be able to do that. I like the almost "mundane" aspect of this content, but I know well that it's pretty important. Just want to say that "Unknown" is to me not something on a throne, but a breed of little animals that scamper when I approach but occasionally allow themselves to be petted. (Macoff)
ReplyDeleteI love how I can relate to your three jobs and how you describe them in this. This isn't a long piece but yet paints a large picture. So great. - slowjamr
