The Miraculous Medal

the Miraculous Medal

I am near the end of the first phase of taking care of my sister’s remnants of life. This afternoon I walked down the lane with her former caregiver to find the appropriate mailbox. I have the key now and all of the boxes I needed to check for this trip are checked. The key to the house and the mailbox is accompanied by a “Miraculous Medal”. On the medal rays of light stream from Mary’s hands which represent the graces given to the person who asks for them while wearing the medal.

I know this because in the very distant past I volunteered at the national shrine of the Miraculous Medal in Perryville, Missouri. I was a seminarian in those days, though not a very faithful one. My sister, Pat, however, was faithful to her belief until the end. She was a constant and dedicated prayer. She prayed for me and my brother all of the time. I no longer believe in the faith, though I’ve always been glad to be a recipient of my sister's prayers. Though I don’t believe in religion, I do believe in asking, which is a prayer of sorts, and an appropriate humble expression of our vulnerability.

If I don’t believe in the answer, I don’t disdain anyone else’s answer either. And I completely believe in the question and try with my limited capabilities to live just that. Ask and you may receive. Ask and you may be connected. Ask and you recognize your own vulnerability. As my therapist, who I call Queen V says: “Tick Tock.”

Tick Tock indeed. I am now done with this first phase of care for my sister’s prayerful life. I have the Miraculous Medal, and I’ll take any graces I can get.

  1. "... I'll take any graces I can get." That's a moment, isn't it?

  2. Oh, I probably have several "miraculous medals" around from the stash of stuff I got from my mother's room after she died. I hope they're working for me. I am appreciating all you're going through, Daniel... (Macoff)
