Complexity

An irony, an hypocrisy, an ignorance?

that we grow up believing so hard

in family and the rugged individual —

more of what advertising has

leaned hard into us,

its victims.

But in a civilization so entwined

in so many systems, so dependent

on so many cogs fitting,

so many sacrifices, so much input,

there is no sensible fundamental unit

to give fealty to. We’ve entrusted

so much that’s essential—

foodstuffs to emotional supports—

to entities and produce from far off.

Believe me when I say your life

depends on Afghani, Chinese, Argentinian,

even Russian blood sweat and soil.

  2. Insight and compelling poetic narrative. Is that a thing? Or is it prose poetry? Whatever the genre, the writing is right on and calls us to awareness and ... maybe ... next step action.
