Not A Material Girl

The most important things in life aren't things. I've never been a material girl (or a shopper).

I'm content to lead a simple life, one I can afford. My idea of luxury living includes consumable splurges like drinking high quality coffee and enjoying occasional dinners out. Oh, and a good haircut and color every six weeks.

If I buy something, it must be useful and fulfill a need. Quality, not quantity or price, is the most important factor. A carton of cheap crap is not a bargain if it breaks, tastes bad or is uncomfortable. And who needs mass quantities anyway? At this point in my life, I have already accumulated way too much stuff.

Retail therapy doesn't work for me. Going to malls, thrift stores and garage sales is punishment (although I do love Ikea).

But I must confess that I adore buying little treats that make others happy--a book for my grandson or a round of cocktails for the girls. Investing in joy provides fond memories. You can never have too many of them.

  1. Oh, I'm with you on buying things for others. I would so like to do more of that! I admit to cruising malls back in the day, just to pass some time. Now that very specific things can be ordered online, I don't do that. I do appreciate the efficient yet relatable way you've written this piece! (Macoff)
