Our buddy Ben, he's into
US history, seems to think
the wigs and stockings clan
were onto something signal:
their freedom rant and life
and happiness and all that.
-- how different would be we,
by the way, if they'd gone
the French way:
liberty, equality, brotherhood? --
This happiness you pursue --
does it improve your freedom part?
That's what I say needs
sitting down long and
serious thought. How else
to gain amnesty from the
tyranny of the advertising?
Just because this brand of liberty
affords gangs of leeway to
the powers that be so they
can try every which way to
sell me a thing, to prey on
my each and all, fabricated or
real, anxiety and insecurity --
well, when oh when will someone
stand up and say, please,
"your crap is trampling my
proper autonomy, my society's,
not to mention the planet's
and she makes all the things!
(did we not abolish slavery?)"

This strikes my mind and heart. Freedom and democracy take work and (shock!) sacrifice. Might be we should all stand up and say ...
ReplyDeleteI ADORE that you mention democracy here! Thank you!
DeleteAnd it goes beyond advertising of products, obviously, to the promotion of certain values. Propaganda abounds. And gosh, it's hard to sort out what originates in one's own senses or "mind," and what's been planted either long ago or yesterday! But, as a side note, "Ben" did study the Civil War, too, and he was obsessed with "reparations" for a while... (Macoff)
