Unlikely Teammates

Put your hand in the bowl and take a slip of paper, they said. I did, knowing my fate was literally in hand.

Who held the other strip of paper that matched mine? My partner for this game would be--gulp--my husband's ex-wife. Wasn't I anxious enough at my first Mensa games night without this random pairing?

Another bowl of paper strips contained the names of real people or fictional characters. First round, she would plunge her hand in that bowl, pull a name out and feed clues to me. Blurting out as many correct answers as possible in 90 seconds is my job. I am great at blurting, I reasoned, so maybe there is hope.

George Washington! Clara Bow! Felix the Cat! Louisa May Alcott! Marie Curie! Scarlett O'Hara! Her clues made the answers pop into my brain and out of my mouth. John Belushi!

When we switched roles, her answers came fast and furious. Joan of Arc! Marvin the Martian! Mary Tyler Moore! Ebenezer Scrooge! We were the team to beat. Nobody came close that night.

That random pairing one evening led to the warm friendship we now enjoy.

  1. Ha! My father belonged to Mensa. I did attend a party once, but they didn't play games, they just talked nerd-talk. Turned out well for you and her!
