My sister is a roiling caldron of hate. Only yesterday afternoon she spoke sweetly to us when we came to take Mama to check out an assisted living center. Mama's cousin lives there with her husband. They love it there.
Who wouldn't? The food is divine, amenities plentiful and the staff friendly. It's like a cruise on dry land. We loved it too.
Now that Mama is considering it, Lori is doing everything she can to poison the prospect. After all, Lori's had a free ride living with Mama for 26 years since Pop died. She works part-time to buy cigarettes and cover her health insurance (yep). Mama is going on 95; Lori is almost 61. Owning a house at 95 is nuts, especially if you don't want to own a house anymore.
It's such a perfect place for my mother that I put a $3,500 check in the mail today as a reservation deposit. That way if a unit becomes available the money is there. My money is refundable if she doesn't move in. It's worth the gamble.
My sister is calling now, eager to spew venom over my bold move and say that Mama doesn't want go anywhere and that she's depressed and crying because of me. I call bullshit. I heard Mama laugh and cut up with cousin Pat. Priceless. Mama pinky-swore that she was coming to Silver Creek, so I'm making good on the first step of that process.
She's lived with a bitter bully long enough. After two and a half decades of words--many harsh--and no action, I'm pushing back on the stumbling block. Heave ho!
