Changed Mind – Mine!

Within the last decade, I have had a sea change in how I regard gender in (genders of?) other people. I remember the starting place. I could not unlock my car – keys inside the car or keys lost, I don’t remember. I called the car lock rescue company. A service person arrived promptly. Very short hair, large, gray, shapeless work shirt and pants, no discernable breasts or not breasts. I was really put out. “A person ought to show their gender by how they look, shouldn’t they?” “Yes,” I answered getting more outdone. The service person opened the car and made a new key. So, good on that. Shortly after, I had a conversation with my adult daughter. I spoke my complaint to her. “That person should have made clear his or her gender!” “Why?” she asked simply. I huffed around a little and then realized that I was being foolish.

My current work situation includes co-workers who are quite young – early 20s, maybe younger. They dress and carry their bodies so that gender cannot be discerned. I love it and I love that I don’t care.

  1. It's a huge and strange issue for many people--what's happening or trying to happen in society right now re:gender. I remember being 20 and being mistaken for a guy as I was walking across someone's property. I felt SO awful! I suppose at the time I thought females had power of some kind that males did not (which is odd). After so many centuries of the binary, maybe it's time to stop emphasizing the differences. We are all human. Now all we need to do is pass the Equal Rights Amendment. (Macoff, fellow Dipper)

  2. Yes! I have heard that there are some cultures that recognize as many as (maybe?) six genders. And ... ah ... the Equal Rights Amendment of happy ... and sad ... memory!
