Compassion and Kindness

There is no way I can write this without sounding idealistic and a bit earnest. Compassionate people, with lives structured with enough bandwidth to see beyond their basic needs to those around them, this is a key to a great nation. It is the kindness of the people, their generosity of spirit and ability to cultivate understanding of themselves, their neighbors and the natural world around them, that builds a base for greatness. It should be that wellbeing and peace are available to all its citizens.

What economic structures and social norms are needed for this? I don't pretend to know. But all groups should be included in defining them. And wise leadership- people respected by others, with a balance of humility and courage, willing to lead and supported by the masses to hold such a role.

Again, I know no practical means to achieve greatness. But I know that the pace of civility and trust that only pops up in corners, rather than being pervasive theme today. Missing that fundamental piece feels like watching a movie with no background music.
