Feeding My Stress

When I step into the office, it cranks into high gear. My whole body goes into fight-or-flight mode.

Immediately I crave food. Anything I can cram into my mouth. It's the only way I can soothe myself to start the day. Food is my performance drug, legal and easily available.

Popping peanut M&Ms or a downing a shot of espresso is not the way to quell stress beyond momentary relief. I forget to drink water, take a deep breath, do anything remotely healthy. It's a feel-bad prescription.

Time to toss down a couple of Tums. Indigestion's on the way. Feeling funky like this is exclusively a Monday through Friday phenomenon. It doesn't happen on the weekend unless my work cell phone rings. Then my body tenses up and my jaw tightens. Snacks, where art thou?

My body will thank me when I quit this stressful job this summer. Maybe I'll kick the food as a tranquilizer habit at last.

  1. Gosh, what do you have to do at work that it brings on so much stress? Is it the people you work with? Are there unrealistic expectations? When you quit, will it be retirement? This is a CLASSIC stress-at-work description, and yet it's still a mystery why it should be. Almost everyone can relate! Why are workplaces like this? Good description, and good luck! (Macoff)
