Hazel's Cat B&B

I am not a cat person. My two-doors-down neighbor Hazel is.

For several years she’s been operating what appears to be a cat B&B. A dozen mangy strays convene at the bowls in front of her garage each morning. She welcomes them back for an early supper (or happy hour) in the afternoon.

Hazel’s kind heart would not be a problem for me if her feline friends only visited her place. I return home to find a black cat lounging on my front door mat, insolently challenging me to cross my own threshold. Once inside, I peer out the sliding glass door to witness a plump ginger cat sipping water out of my swimming pool. At least a solo visitor is better than the time I saw eight cats slurping away.

These bold invaders don’t seem to understand they’re not welcome here. I am allergic to cats. The two dogs next door moved away with their owners in January, so it’s just me and “Cat Away” repellent spray to fight them off. This is my turf and I’ll do the spraying, boys.

The situation is annoying but not intolerable. What’s intolerable is the leaf-dumping tree in the dogs’ former backyard that looms ominously over my pool. Hazel will close the cat B&B long before anyone does something about that triple-trunked tree.

  1. What needs to be done about the tree? Can you put a cover on the pool? Surely the leaves in spring and summer are few! Anyway, I am a cat person, but sometimes cats can get tiresome. On a hopeful note, I was allergic to cats for a while about 20 years ago, and then it just got better on its own. I have almost always had a cat, and have one now (as well as a dog). The cat is annoying as heck, being old and always seeking my lap. Do the cats outside affect your allergies? I hope not! And I hope you can occasionally appreciate their beauty! (Macoff)
