he’s questioning …

how much one’s integrity might be soiled,
if you’d asked a girl to be yours,
in the forever and ever way,
based on a false insinuation of …
being in the family way. Today
was when he put together her lie.
He’d been baited and he’d bit,
that rough day five weeks ago.
The morning had started with a plan including …
cutting her from his life, whew. Felt good again.
But emotional distress and news of …
pregnancy … had him reversed,
responsible, feeling … adult.
Post proposal coital bliss — I mean,
Why not? — seemed a special shared happiness.
And all kinds of plans began, ensued.
But the doctor visit, put off some weeks,
happened today, and him
standing in the foyer, putting together
the proverbial two & two
(really just one plus one),
pondering the calendar …
She wasn’t pregnant then! But, clever clever,
she was now — Macguffin’d he, Catch-22’d,
wondering …

Aha! The best line of the evening turned into a poem! This is unusually fictional for you, and well done! The "standing in the foyer" phrase grounds it (literally, his feet on the floor). Now what? (She must have intuited his "plan" that morning. (Macoff)
