Light on my feet

Footwear should be comfortable. Our feet support and hold up our whole bodies. Confining them to narrow space, inflexible features or requiring contortionism while they are responsible for such an important job is unacceptable.

I wish that I could just wear “cute” shoes or heels but I cannot. The days I have worn decorative footwear ended with my hips and back accusing me of poor choices. I also have a deep desire to retain the ability to run, defend myself, or do a cartwheel with the knowledge that my feet are one hundred percent with me. There is a swagger that comes from having comfortable feet.

I have a pair of obligatory black wedges at my desk, not comfortable but required. I daily come and go from my office like Mister Rogers, coming in a different pair of shoes and jacket, and swapping for the ones I keep there. So I guess I’m still somewhat concerned with complying with public expectations, but I generally limit it to the hours I’m paid.

  1. Good commentary on the compromises we make to support ourselves. Play on the word "support" was not intended. And I like your expressed regard for your whole body.

  2. Perhaps the dress requirements of certain jobs are not because the higher-ups are concerned that much with appearances, but because they simply want to make sure they have control over their underlings. Though I do NOT see you as an underling! You are doing what's good for your body & soul! The "swagger" that comes from one's feet being comfortable is real! (Macoff)
