When you pray

A wise man once told me:
When you pray,
Open wide your hands.
God will not take from you those cares
To which you cling so tightly,
And cannot fill with blessings
Hands that are already full of worry.

So let go of what troubles you,
If only to allow someone else
To carry that burden for just one moment.
And wait expectantly,
With hands outstretched
To receive the gifts
Freely offered
From God/others/the universe.

No, of course
It isn't as easy as it sounds.
And while I believe
Prayer is always answered,
I am not naive enought to think
Prayer is always answered
The way I wish it were.
Yet while the Universe may not
Bend to my desires,
If I can pray with open hands
And an open heart
It just may be I am
The one who's changed.

  1. This is beautiful and completely in line with how I am believing and trying to act at this stage. Something in this poem, somewhere in the second verse I felt my shoulders rest in relief. Thank you for this lyrical moment.

  2. You are wise, indeed, as expressed in your poetry! (We don't really know how you are in real life! But I trust there is some connection!) I often COMPLETELY overlook the idea that someone (or the universe) may be trying to give me something. I don't want to "need" anything. But to be simply OPEN is a different thing, a different feeling. I will try it again! Thanks for the encouragement! (Macoff)

  3. Thanks for this Zachary. It is very beautiful and true and today I have felt my hands to be so full of other's burdens that I have not been able to open them or lay the burdens down. Maybe tomorrow.

  4. Make friends with your grief. Sometimes you cannot let it go . .. and that's okay too. Love!
