Bloom Where You Are Planted

A few years ago, I grew some tomato plants in some old pots we had. Three years ago I got two steel trough planters and filled them with soil and perlite that a local gardening friend recommended. I went to Tomatomania for my seedlings and managed to grow some tomatoes along with cilantro and basil. Last year I bought a few Sun Gold tomato seedlings from a local woman and planted those. No more designer tomatoes when the yellow-orange cherry tomatoes are my favorite. There would be much joy in this encounter with the earth, except for being married to an engineer who likes to over analyze and help. This year I was going to skip growing tomatoes as I just can’t handle the micromanaging right now. However, a rogue tomato sprouted on its own. When I noticed, it was still small enough to put a tomato cage around it. Costco had bags of organic soil so I added one to my cart. On Sunday afternoon, I used a three prong garden claw to loosen the older soil and mix in the new stuff. Today I saw one tiny tomato where a flower had been. Of course I posted it on Instagram. I may plant some basil, too, for pesto or caprese salad which are excellent summer treats.

  2. Sun Gold tomatoes! Once you've had them, why would you ever have another kind. Except, of course, for the large homegrown tomatoes with which we make tomato sandwiches. I appreciate, too, your expression of frustration when someone else tries to mess with your jam, so to speak. Good luck with this year's crops.
